"The Battle, vol 1 is written by Frédéric Richaud, based on a novel by Patrick Rambaud, with artwork by Ivan Gil and colors by Albertine Ralenti. The book depicts the battle of Essling in 1809, where Napoleon fought against the Austrians. I feel that I wasn't the right recipient for this story. I didn't have any knowledge about this historic event beforehand, and the book doesn't make any real effort to set the stage for those who don't already know the context. It just jumps right into the action. It would have been very helpful to have an introductory text that explains the build-up to this battle and the stakes that are at play. Without that information it's hard to really get engaged in the story. It's too bad, because the writing itself is good, both the characterization and the dialogue. The artwork is also very good. Ivan Gil really brings this historic era to life. The Battle, vol 1 is probably a rewarding read for those that already have knowledge about the events depicted. For the rest of us I feel there's not that much to get from this book unfortunately."
