Spirou and Fantasio, paying the Count of Champignac a visit, discover that he is hiding an imposing visitor: a towering Russian genius who has created an anti-gravity ray. Unfortunately, the KGB is already hunting him, because he’s decided he wants to keep his invention secret. And to make things worse, his former associate, who knows almost as much as he about the ray, has been captured by Chinese authorities. Spirou decides it is vital to free the prisoner …

Back from their adventures on Zorglub’s lunar base, Spirou and Fantasio find themselves in a new pickle. Spirou Magazine is being sued for immorality and irresponsibility. The punitive damages bleed the coffers dry, and the two reporters have no choice but to sign a contract with an American corporation, the Viper, to bail the magazine out. But Spirou soon discovers that they’ve been tricked, and that in one stroke of the pen, he may have signed away his whole life!

Spirou, Fantasio, and the Count of Champignac have decided to enter a competition organised by a rich ship-owner: to design a method for human beings to safely dive to and work at a depth of 200 metres. While the Count’s genius is up to the task, increasingly serious acts of sabotage begin to endanger his prototypes – as well as the three friends’ lives. Who could have a reason to put a stop to their endeavour – and what is the competition’s real goal, anyway?
