Julien Frey tells the story of one of these war brides, Odette, his wife's great aunt, who now lives with her children and grandchildren in Michigan. Lorsque Julien débarque dans le Michigan pour y rencontrer la famille américaine de sa femme, il découvre l'Amérique du Midwest marquée par la crise des subprimes et des cousins pas ordinaires. Mais surtout, il rencontre Odette, la grand-tante française au caractère bien trempé. Cette parisienne qui, à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, s'est mariée avec un soldat américain. Comme elle, 200 000 européennes ont quitté leur famille et leur pays par amour pour un GI. 200 000 femmes qu'on appelle des « War Brides ».
