"On his death bed, Ikke, older brother to Greg, confesses to a heinous crime committed 27 years previously which had been the talk of the peaceful town of Dubbo in New South Wales: the murder of Greg's wife, Lee Duncan. 27 years! More than quarter of a century that Greg – the suspected murderer – spent on the run from the law. He is thought to be hiding out in America. Some even talk of Japan. In actual fact, Greg never left the country. He used a fake identity to start a new life breeding purebred sheep, all alone, on the arid land the Aborigines call ""the old lady who never forgets"". If Ikke is guilty, that means that Greg can finally be proven innocent. He can return to Dubbo, the town that turned against him. This would be his ""return to mankind""... Ikke's incredible confession has turned things completely on their head: the hero was actually the villain of the piece all along, and the villain turned out to be the hero. On his return, Dubbo's mayor is falling over himself to make it up to Greg. But the town's sheriff, Neville MacGhee, still has his suspicions. Despite Ikke's confession, despite the details he gave that point to his guilt, MacGhee senses something isn't right. And we sense it too. All too often the baddy turns out to be the person we least expect. So can the person we most suspect turn out to be a goody after all?"
